Kirsti.
1970s: “Title, Title (Title, Title Title Title)”, [Artist] & [His Band]
Oh, what a night
Late December back in sixty three
What a very special time for me
As I remember, what a night
Hint: It’s a bit of a basic pick but hey, it’s a classic. This song is by one of those old-timey bands which are named after the lead singer and then the band name - like “Buddy Holly and The Crickets”. The lead singer has a name sort of like a truthful low elongated landform that runs between hills or mountains; the band shares its name with a way we divide up the year into periods characterised by the weather. Song title in the lyrics quoted.
Note from Kirsti: The jukebox musical Jersey Boys is about this group, and you may also know them from their song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”.
1980s: “Title Title ‘Title”, [Artist]
I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five and dime
Played it ‘til my fingers bled
Was the summer of ‘69
Hint: I don’t know anything about this man and didn’t know it was him who sung this song so sorry to fans of this Canadian singer from the late ‘70s – present but clearly, he hasn’t made an impression on me. Upon researching, I do recognise his other songs “Heaven” and “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” so idk why his name was apparently a mystery to me. He also apparently did the soundtrack for Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron so, you learn something new every day. Song title in the lyrics quoted.
Note from Kirsti: He also did “When You’re Gone” with Mel C from the Spice Girls, which is a bop!
1990s: “Title”, [Artist]
Shakedown, 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
June bug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we’d never see an end to it all
Hint: I didn’t know squat about this song, so I was surprised to learn that I recognised it when I heard it. This song was released the year before I was born and reached number 9 in the NZ charts. This American alternative rock band has featured in the lyrics quiz before and was described as an activity you might partake in on November 1st if your appetite for Halloween festivities is particularly meagre. Song title in the lyrics quoted.
Note from Kirsti: You may know this band from their songs “Tonight, Tonight” or “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”.
2000s: “Title”, [Artist]
I would call you every Saturday night
And we’d both stay out ‘til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by, I will always be
In a club with you in 1973
Singing, “Here we go again”
Hint: This song by an English recording artist was inspired by the club scene in Ibiza and the artist was apparently “trying the Dr. Dre end of the scale” which is baffling to me as this is quite a slow, sad song?? Whatever, sir. This artist shares his first name with a captain of the Starship Enterprise and a last name with something you might pass around at a party but wouldn’t want your knives to be. Song title in the lyrics quoted.
Note from Kirsti: Warble it with me! “You’re beautiful, it’s true…”
2010s: “Title”, [Artist 1] and [Artist 2]
I just wanna go back, back to 1999
Take a ride to my old neighbourhood
I just wanna go back
Sing “Hit me baby, one more time”
Wanna go back, wanna go
Hint: This song was released in 2018 and shares its name with a song by Prince released in 1982. One of the artists features in the recently released Barbie: The Album with her song “Speed Drive” (which was my personal favourite in the film). The other artist is a singer, actor, and former YouTuber from Australia. For an esoteric hint, in terms of traditional spelling, the first artist is missing an “e” from her first name, and the second artist has an extra “e” at the end of his! Song title in the lyrics quoted.
Note from Kirsti: You might know her from her songs “I Love It” (used in a car ad despite the lyrics “I crashed my car into the bridge”) or “Boom Clap”; him you might know from portraying the younger Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and for sharing a name with the city that was the setting for the Trojan War.
2020s: “Title Title Title.Title”, [Artist 1] and [Artist 2]
He said, “I’ve been to the year 3000
Not much has changed but they lived underwater
And your great, great, great granddaughter
Is pretty fine”
(Is pretty fine)
Hint: This may confuse some, but here I’m not looking for the original song recorded by the British pop rock band in 2003, nor am I looking for the well-known cover by an American trio of brothers in 2006 (who amended that last, raunchy lyric to “is doin’ fine”). Turns out, both bands collaborated this year to re-release a new version of this song, who knew? This latest version is back to the original lyrics, if you were curious. The original artist briefly merged with fellow pop rock band McFly to form a “pop-punk supergroup” in the mid-2010s. The cover artists are brothers and will be performing for the first time in New Zealand ever in February next year. Title basically in the lyrics quoted, but it’s like… the second version. From both groups.
Note from Kirsti: Honestly didn’t know this band was still around. I definitely knew their name from the pop punk years but reading their wikipedia page NONE of their songs stand out to me…their name is another word for “munted”. As for the trio of brothers? Well, one of them is now ex to both Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift, proving that “Mr. Perfectly Fine” is a complete idiot for giving up either of those goddesses who were far too good for him. These brothers do write catchy songs though, no lie.
