Good afternoon friends!
Those hints sure did help didn’t they?
There was a definite difference in the songs identified before and after the hints came out - prior to the hints, the most commonly identified song was System of a Down’s “Chop Suey!”; after the hints it was The Beatles’ “Let It Be”. The Vamps’ “Wake Up” was the least correctly identified song, which is a shame as it’s bit of a bop.
Your leaderboard this week:
🥇 on 12/12: Team Impoverished, Bex K, Team BSA, Legislation Lovers, and Megan and The Chamberlains
🥈 on 11/12: Siobhan M, DC Lyfers, and The Bögan Crüe
🥉 on 10/12: Rachel B
Have a lovely weekend friends, and go the Black Ferns! (even I am planning on tuning in for that game).
Kirsti.
1950s: “Wake Up Little Susie”, The Everly Brothers
Wake up, little Susie, and weep
Hint: This song came from American rock brothers known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing (Simon and Garfunkel did an excellent cover too). The brothers combined elements of rock and roll, country, and pop, becoming pioneers of country rock. Other songs of theirs you might know are “Bye Bye Love”, “All I Have to Do Is Dream”, “Problems”, and “Cathy’s Clown”.
1970s (band): “Let It Be”, The Beatles
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Hint: Liverpool.
1970s (solo artist): “Maggie May”, Rod Stewart
Wake up, Maggie
Hint: Rachel Hunter’s ex-husband.
2000s (band): “Chop Suey!”, System of a Down
Wake up (Wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little makeup
Hint: This song is the first single from this Armenian-American heavy metal band's second album Toxicity. That album was number one on the charts during the week of the September 11 attacks, and this song made its way onto the list of post-9/11 inappropriate songs because of its political message and especially the line “I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide”. I’d always wondered about the title (a dish in American Chinese cuisine); apparently the song was originally titled “Suicide” but their record company made them change it, and they chose this title as a form of word-play. Donate to Wikipedia, won’t you? Thank you.
2000s (solo artist): “Tik Tok”, Kesha
Wake up in the morning feelin' like P. Diddy
Hint: This American singer-songwriter’s first major success came in early 2009 after she was featured on American rapper Flo Rida's number-one single “Right Round”. After a series of lawsuits against her former producer she was able to restart her career with the album Rainbow and it’s stunning lead single “Praying”; other songs of hers you might know are “Your Love Is My Drug”, “Die Young” and “We R Who We R”.
2010s: “Wake Up”, The Vamps
So wake up
Your sleeping heart
Hint: This British band shares their name with 3 other bands: a Norwegian folk band, a Japanese rock band formed in 2008, and an Australian band formed in 1965. It’s a slang term for “a seductive woman who uses her sexual attractiveness to exploit men”, which is a slightly odd name for a boy band but hey, they’re rolling with it. Other songs of theirs you may know are “Married in Vegas”, “Somebody To You”, “Can We Dance”, as well as a cover/remake/adaption of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecelia” with Shawn Mendes and a cover of “Kung Fu Fighting” for Kung Fu Panda 3.
