Welcome to Friday afternoon and the answers! Some important updates for y’all:
As with seemingly most of the world I have been blasting the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack non-stop recently and honestly I think I can confirm at this point that at least one of these songs will be on the Songs of 2025 Quiz in a few months time. Check out the Genius.com chart as of this afternoon:
The most recognised song this week was The Beatles’ “Doctor Robert” which honestly surprised me; Mötley Crüe’s “Dr. Feelgood” caused the most confusion which I was also surprised by. I love surprises like this!
1960s (A): “Doctor Robert”, The Beatles
1960s (B): “Dr. Feelgood”, Aretha Franklin
1980s (A) “Like A Surgeon”, “Weird Al” Yankovic
1980s (B): “Dr Feelgood”, Mötley Crüe
2000s: “Without Me”, Eminem
Your leaderboard this week:
🥇 on 10/10: Team Impoverished, I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Quiz Team Name, Vercisca, WDPTBTI, The Bogan Crūe, BSA Team, Team LSP, Lore in Order, Flying Lizards, All the worlds a song, Radio Gaga’s, and Wreck It Ralph
🥈 on 9/10: Siobhan M
🥉 on 8/10: Quartz
Have a great weekend, and if you have Netflix: watch K-Pop Demon Hunters, it’s very good.
Kirsti.
1960s (A): “Doctor Robert”, The Beatles
You're a new and better man
He helps you to understand
He does everything he can
Doctor Robert
If you're down, he'll pick you up
Doctor Robert
Take a drink from his special cup
Hint: The medication offered by this Doctor helped this band through many of their Hard Day’s Nights…at least until they found Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Song title in lyrics quoted.
1960s (B): “Dr. Feelgood”, Aretha Franklin
Don't send me no doctor
Fillin' me up with all of those pills
I got me a man named Doctor Feelgood
And oh, yeah, that man takes care of all of my pains and my ills
His name is Doctor Feelgood in the morning
And takin' care of business is really this man's game
And after one visit to Dr. Feelgood
You'll understand why Feelgood is his name
Hint: Had no idea this song existed until I wrote this quiz, but RESPECT to this artist for it (which is on the same album as this song, and also “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)”. Song title in lyrics quoted.
1980s (A) “Like A Surgeon”, “Weird Al” Yankovic
I was last in my class
Barely passed at the institute
Now I'm trying to avoid
Yeah, I'm trying to avoid
A malpractice suit
Hey, like a surgeon
Cuttin' for the very first time
Like a surgeon
Organ transplants are my line
Hint: “Just to re-state, [this artist] does NOT take suggestions for song ideas, unless you are Madonna, and it’s a decent suggestion.” Song title in lyrics quoted.
1980s (B): “Dr Feelgood”, Mötley Crüe
He's the one they call Dr. Feelgood
He's the one that makes ya feel all right
Hint: I have such a soft spot this for American Heavy Metal band, and I have no idea how they survived the 80s but I’m glad they did. You may know them from such songs as “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Kickstart My Heart”. Song title in lyrics quoted.
2000s: “Without Me”, Eminem
A little bit of weed mixed with some hard liquor
Some vodka that'll jump-start my heart quicker
Than a shock when I get shocked at the hospital
By the doctor when I'm not cooperating
When I'm rockin' the table while he's operating
Hint: This song is recognised as one of the densest raps in history though its often ignored as such because it is “poppy” and a lead single. Serving as a sequel to “The Real Slim Shady”, it mocks a number of this rapper’s critics, including Vice President Dick Cheney (including his recurring heart problems) and his wife Lynne, the FCC, Chris Kirkpatrick (of NSYNC), Limp Bizkit and Moby, as well as parodying Prince's decision to change his name to an unpronounceable symbol. Song title not in lyrics quoted.
