Good afternoon friends!
A quiet quiz week…are we all ready for a long weekend? I know I am.
This week the song that everybody knew was Craig David’s “7 Days”, with David Bowie’s “Thursday’s Child” causing the most confusion.
Your leaderboard this week:
🥇 on 12/12: Rob H, Megan and The Chamberlains, Kathleen Turner Overdrive, Team Collins Plumbing and Gas, The Reign and the Terror, and Legislation Lovers
🥈 on 11.5/12: The Bögan Crüe
🥉 on 11/12: Siobhan M, and Bex K
Hope you all have a lovely long weekend, and I’ll see you on Tuesday with the next quiz!
Kirsti.
1970s: “Easy”, The Commodores
Know it sounds funny but I just can't stand the pain
Girl, I'm leaving you tomorrow
Seems to me girl, you know I've done all I can
You see I begged, stole and I borrowed, yeah
Hint: Faith No More covered this song, and their version is arguably more well-known than the original artist, which is a type of car made by Holden/a naval rank above captain and below rear admiral.
1980s: “Blue Monday”, New Order
I thought I was mistaken
I thought I heard your words
Tell me how do I feel?
Tell me now, how do I feel?
Hint: This band's integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s. The name of the song does reference a day of the week, but is never mentioned in the lyrics.
1990s: “Thursday’s Child”, David Bowie
Seeing my past to let it go
(Throw me tomorrow)
Only for you I don't regret
That I was Thursday's child
Hint: Track 1 and the first single off this artist's 1999 album 'hours...' (speech marks included). This song was inspired by the biography of Eartha Kitt.
2000s (UK solo): “7 Days”, Craig David
I met this girl on Monday
Took her for a drink on Tuesday
We were making love by Wednesday
And on Thursday and Friday and Saturday, we chilled on Sunday
Hint: This British singer-songwriter is famous for walking away from the troubles in his life. This song shares its name with a (generally unfunny) Kiwi comedy TV show.
2000s (UK band): “Friday Night”, The Darkness
Monday cycling
Tuesday gymnastics
Dancing on a Friday night
I got Bridge Club on Wednesday
Archery on Thursday
Dancing on a Friday night
Hint: This rock band features brothers Justin and Dan, and the son of the drummer from Queen, whose name is Rufus. They're coming to play at the Hunter Lounge in October, and the guest quizmaster saw them the last time they came - they know how to put on a classic rock 'n' roll show!
(Your quizmistress saw them back at the Big Day Out when that was still a thing and agrees, very good show)
2000s (NZ): “Every Day’s a Saturday”, Elemeno P
Called up my friends and I'm thinking of a barbeque
Mid afternoon and there's nothing better to do
Feeling good and they sky seems extra blue
I can almost see Utopia
Hint: This Kiwi band's name references consecutive letters of the alphabet.
