1930s: “On the Good Ship Lollipop”, Shirley Temple
On the good ship
Lollipop
It's a sweet trip
To a candy shop
Where bon-bons play
On the sunny beach of peppermint bay
Hint: This artist was an American actress, singer, dancer, and diplomat, who was Hollywood's number-one box-office draw as a child actress from 1934 to 1938. Later, she was named United States ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, and also served as Chief of Protocol of the United States. This song comes from the 1934 film Bright Eyes and actually refers to an aircraft; the scene in Bright Eyes where the song appears takes place on a taxiing American Airlines Douglas DC-2. This actress was in SO MANY films in her career, including “Curly Top”, “The Littlest Rebel”, and “Dimples”. A standard mocktail is named after her - legend has it that when she was out to dinner at a nice restaurant with her parents and other Hollywood types who were all enjoying cocktails, the bartender made her a special nonalcoholic drink so she could feel fancy too. Title in lyrics quoted.
1950s: “Lollipop”, The Chordettes
Call my baby Lollipop, tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin' dance
Man, I haven't got a chance
Hint: You may know this Canadian female vocal quartet from their songs “Mr. Sandman”, “Born to Be With You”, “Lay Down Your Arms”, and “Just Between You and Me”. Their name is a made-up feminised version of the word for “a group of (typically three or more) notes sounded together, as a basis of harmony”. Title in lyrics quoted.
1960s: “Sugar Sugar”, The Archies
Sugar, ah honey honey
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you
Honey, ah sugar sugar
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you
Hint: This band is a fictional American rock band that features in media produced by, and related to, Archie Comics. They are best remembered for their appearance in the animated TV series The Archie Show - and, since I don’t think I’ve used a Gorillaz song in the quiz, is the first animated band to appear in the quiz (the Riverdale series has also included a version of the band). This song was their biggest hit, and title is in lyrics quoted.
1990s: “Sex and Candy”, Marcy Playground
Hanging around, downtown by myself
And I had so much time to sit and think about myself
And then there she was, like double cherry pie
Yeah, there she was, like disco super-fly
I smell sex and candy here, mmm
Who's that lounging in my chair? Mmm
Who's that casting devious stares in my direction?
Momma this surely is a dream, yeah
Yeah, momma this surely is a dream, dig it
Hint: This post-grunge song with psychedelic elements was based on something said to the lead singer of this band when someone walked into the room and interrupted his girlfriend and him having an intimate moment…Maroon 5 released a slow, soul cover of the song as a bonus track on the album V (2014). This is literally the only song of theirs that I can name, so your clues for this band’s name are [A woman’s name that shares it’s first four letters with the first four letters of the 3rd month of the year, and then one other] [an outdoor area provided for children to play in, especially at a school or public park]. Title in lyrics quoted.
2000s: “Candyman”, Christina Aguilera
He took me to the Spider Club at Hollywood and Vine
We drank champagne and we danced all night
We shook the paparazzi for a big surprise (for a big surprise)
The gossip tonight will be tomorrow's headline (Oh oh, oh)
He's a one-stop shop, makes my cherry pop
He's a sweet-talkin', sugar-coated Candyman (Ooh yeah)
Hint: A fun tribute to the Andrews Sisters' song, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, this song is a serious bop from an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality known for her four-octave vocal range. Other songs of hers you might know are “Genie in a Bottle” and “What A Girl Wants”. Title in lyrics quoted.
2010s: “Candy”, Robbie Williams
Hey, ho, here she goes
Either a little too high or a little too low
Got no self-esteem and vertigo
'Cause she thinks she's made of candy
Hey, ho, here she goes
Either a little too loud or a little too close
Got a hurricane at the back of her throat
She thinks she's made of candy
Hint: This song, about a girl called Candice, is about a girl who thinks she's great. And she might be, but she's a bit nefarious with her ways. This artist a former member of Take That and is known for his songs “Angels”, “Millenium” and “Rock DJ”. Title in lyrics quoted.
