Welcome to Friday afternoon and the answers!
Three songs were correctly identified by everyone who sent in a entry this week: “Take It Easy” from The Eagles, “Mr. Jones” from Counting Crows, and “Boyfriend” from Dove Cameron (a banger, truly). The songs that caused the most confusion were “Turn! Turn! Turn!” from The Byrds and “Let ‘Em Talk” from Kesha ft. Eagles of Death Metal (also a banger).

1960s: “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, The Byrds
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything (Turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (Turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose under heaven
Hint: Okay it’s not an original song by this band (it was a Pete Seeger song originally) but this American folk group did THE definitive version. The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the book of Ecclesiastes, as found in the King James Version (1611) of the Bible, though the sequence of the words was rearranged for the song. Ecclesiastes is traditionally ascribed to King Solomon who would have written it in the 10th century BC, which makes these the oldest lyrics included in the quiz! Neat. You may also know this band from their covers of many Bob Dylan songs, including “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “All I Really Want to Do”, and for contributing David Crosby to Crosby, Stills & Nash, as well as to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Song title in lyrics quoted.
1970s: “Take It Easy”, The Eagles
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and take it easy
Hint: The debut single from the band most famous for singing about a hotel where you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave…Song title in lyrics quoted.
1990s: “Mr. Jones”, Counting Crows
Mr. Jones and me
Look into the future
Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you
I don't think so, she's looking at me
Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me
I will never be lonely
Hint: Another debut single, this time from the band who received a 2004 Academy Award nomination for their single “Accidentally in Love” from Shrek 2 (you might also know them from their song “Round Here”, and of course from this song). Song title in lyrics quoted.
2000s: “Not Ready to Make Nice”, The Chicks
Forgive? Sounds good
Forget? I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting
I'm through with doubt
There's nothin' left for me to figure out
I've paid a price
And I'll keep payin'
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and I don't have time
To go 'round and 'round and 'round
Hint: Days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, a member of this band told a London audience that the band did not endorse the war and were ashamed of US President George W. Bush being from Texas. The remarks triggered boycotts in the US and a backlash from fans; in 2006 they released this song in response. You may know them from such country songs as “Wide Open Spaces”, “Cowboy Take Me Away” and their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”. Song title in lyrics quoted.
2010s: “Let ‘Em Talk”, Kesha ft. Eagles of Death Metal
Do your thing, don't care if we make 'em jealous
We're the kings, life is just our party palace
(Whoa) Just let 'em talk about it
(Whoa) Just let 'em talk, just let 'em talk
Do whatever makes you happy
And screw everything else if you ask me, hey, yeah
'Cause life is short and we only got one shot
So let's go balls-out, give it everything we got
Hint: Following the release of her second studio album, Warrior (2012), this artist dealt with several struggles in her personal and professional life, including a stint in a treatment center for an eating disorder and emotional issues, as well as a highly publicized legal battle with her former record producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. This song is from her subsequent album, and is honestly just a banger. The featured artist is the link to the theme this week - their name is that of the 1970s band, but specifically of death metal. Song title in lyrics quoted.
2020s: “Boyfriend”, Dove Cameron
Thinking I'm gonna steal you from him
I could be such a gentleman
Plus all my clothes would fit
I could be a better boyfriend
I don't need to tell you twice
All the ways hе can't suffice
If I could give you some advicе
I would leave with me tonight
Hint: Another lead single from a debut album…I swear I didn’t do this on purpose. This song is from an American singer and actress who gained recognition for her dual role of the eponymous characters in the Disney Channel comedy series Liv and Maddie . She also starred in Disney Channel’s Descendants film franchise. Her first name is a bird that is a symbol of peace; her family name she shares with a director called James and a former UK Prime Minister called David. Song title in lyrics quoted.
